Boys’ Empathy in Action: Breaking Taboos at Gihon Secondary School

Gihon Secondary School in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, is a prominent public school with 3225 students (1874 females) and 170 staff members.

The school faced challenges with student behavior, including incidents leading to injuries and tragic deaths. Female students feared attending school due to menstruation-related concerns and inadequate sanitary access.

Project WISE brought positive changes through inclusive training for male students and teachers, promoting respect and understanding regarding menstruation. Male students actively participated in promoting menstrual hygiene by collecting and donating sanitary pads.

The school implemented focused approaches to menstrual hygiene, including equipping the MH room with necessary supplies.
